October 21, 2009 Catholic Memorial (6-2, 5-1) at
Arrowhead (7-1, 5-1) This
battle of conference powers pairs the Crusaders against the Warhawks in a
likely battle for second place in the Classic Eight. Arrowhead leads the
conference in points scored (229) and points allowed (51), while Catholic
Memorial is second in both categories at 225 and 67, respectively. In recent
weeks the Arrowhead passing game has really come alive. Receiver Russ Finco caught 4 touchdown passes last week and has 9
touchdowns in only 5 games this year. Over half of quarterback Tom Parish's
yards have gone to Finco this season. The Catholic
Memorial secondary is a good one with Mitch Shultz and Derek Peake both attaining second team all conference last
season. The
Crusader secondary could mean that we see a lot of Brian Crook. The senior
running back hasn't gotten the ball as much as other top rushers in the
conference, but Crook is averaging over 6 yards per carry and has found the end
zone 6 times. Other threats on the ground for Arrowhead are juniors Colton
Schweitzer and Jamal Wright. Pete Karczewski leads the Memorial offense in touchdowns with 9,
but the Crusaders have shown that they distribute the load in the offense well.
Broc Kocour is averaging
over 8 yards per carry, and quarterback Dominic Zanoni
is also a threat with his feet. The Crusaders have 6 different players who
average over 25 yards per game on the ground. Passing
has been an issue this year for Zanoni. The
quarterback is completing only 37 percent of his passes and is averaging less
than 50 yards per game. Should the strong Arrowhead defense hold down the
ground game of Memorial, Zanoni needs to get in a
rhythm to force Arrowhead to respect the pass. The size of the Crusaders
receivers could be used to a great advantage against a smaller secondary for
Arrowhead. Strength
meets strength in a number of ways in this exciting match up. Both teams are
coming off blowout wins and should be fired up for this Wednesday night game.
Arrowhead has scored 35 points in four straight games while the Crusaders have
done so twice in a row. Both defenses are too good to allow that many points,
but the versatility of the Arrowhead offense should be enough to win at
home. Prediction: Arrowhead 28 Catholic Memorial 21 Kettle Moraine (4-4, 3-3) at The
Lasers are the only team currently at .500 in the conference; therefore they
are the only team fighting for still fighting for a playoff spot. For them to
win this game and get in they need play a much better game then last week when
they lost to West 38-14. The Popes aren't nearly as strong of a team as West
even with Jared Russo under center, but still could present a formidable
challenge. The
Lasers run a creative offense led by sophomore quarterback Kyle Kita and running
back Garret Wescott. Kita often lines up in the
shotgun and uses his feet well. His running has been productive but hasn't
shown the ability to win in a big game yet this season. Kita is second in the
conference in passing yards and tied for first in passing touchdowns. Wescott
is one of three players in the conference with over 100 carries, and the Lasers
mix up his looks well. He will line up in the backfield but also sometimes
takes direct snaps in a form of the wildcat offense. Wescott
has had trouble finding the end zone this year with just two scores in 105
carries. The Popes
have moved the ball efficiently with Jared Russo at the helm, but it hasn't
translated into points. In the two games he has been back the Popes have scored
just 7 and 14 points, while Russo hasn't thrown a touchdown pass in 60
attempts. Still, he throws for over 200 yards per game and the Kettle Moraine
secondary will need to be a lot sharper than last week when they were destroyed
by West's passing attack. Prediction: Kettle Moraine 26 The Northstars are the only thing that stands between West and
an undefeated season, but don't expect them to be in the way for too long. The
offensive attack for the Wolverines has shown both the ability to run and pass
the ball effectively. Charlie Congdon leads the
Classic Eight in rushing yards, and needs just 124 to reach 1,000 on the
season. As shown last week, Ryan Young can throw the ball for success. Nick Tehan has emerged as his big play guy, as he has jumped to
second in the conference in receiving yards. The North
offense is a lot of throwing the football, which teams have struggled to do all
year against West. Christopher Aho has his work cut
out for him with the combination of Nate Angles and Tehan lurking in the secondary. Prediction: The
bottom two teams meet Wednesday to determine who will finish last in the conference
in wins. Mukwonago picked up their first win last week with a great game from
quarterback Derek Hasanoglu, who is actually second
in the conference in rushing yards. His presence alone will be enough to give
the Indians there second win an as many games. Prediction: Mukwonago 35 |
